Accounting

Accounting is offered to students at AS and A2 level and requires no prior knowledge of the subject.  The study of subject helps students to develop the transferable skills of numeracy, communication, ICT, application, presentation, analysis and evaluation in the accounting context.  Students will also develop the capacity for methodical and critical thought as a basis for further study of accounting as a career, and for business degrees where the subject is often a component of the course.

During the two years of the course students will study both financial and management accounting.  Assessment will be by examination, made up of four externally marked papers, two at the end of each year.

In the first year students will be able to develop an understanding of the double-entry system, the skills of keeping accurate accounting records, and develop their knowledge and understanding of the ways in which financial and management accounting can provide useful information for monitoring business performance and for planning future business operations.

The second year requires the student to develop their understanding of the legal requirements for financial accounting with regards to private and public limited companies and their published accounts, and develop knowledge of the techniques used to aid the management of a business and contribute to effective decision-making.
