St. Anthony's College

Foundation Stage

For our youngest children we offer a friendly and safe environment.  They are taught by very experienced members of staff and make rapid progress.  We endeavour to make this first schooling experience as positive as possible and our key aim is to ensure learning if fun.

Children are admitted to the pre-school class at the age of three and to the reception class at the age of four.

Classes are from 9.00am through to 3.00pm, Monday to Friday.

In the Foundation Stage, ( Pre-school and Reception),  we aim to make learning for young children a rewarding and enjoyable experience, in which they can create, discover, investigate, practise and consolidate their developing knowledge, skills, understanding and attitudes.

There are six main areas of learning which are:

  1. Personal, social and emotional development – where children are encouraged to work individually or as part of a group, to understand there are agreed rules and values in the classroom and to build good relationships with both adults and peers.
  2. Communication, language and literacy – speaking in sentences, pre-reading, pre-writing activates, listening to stories and songs, leading onto independent reading and writing.
  3. Mathematical development – number and counting activities, shapes, patterns, measuring, simple addition and subtraction.
  4. Knowledge and understanding of the world – children are encouraged to explore their surroundings, construct with various materials, choose their own activities, etc.
  5. Physical development – sports, music and movement, discovering your body and space, being able to use both small and large equipment.
  6. Creative development – children are encouraged to be involved in all art/craft and design activities such as painting, modelling, cutting and sticking, sand and water play.

In addition the children are also taught by specialist subject teachers for Spanish, P.E., and TEFL.

There are also a number of trips which take place during the school year which the children can participate in such as visiting Granja Equela (a farm school), Selwo Marina and Fuengirola Zoo.
