ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Grade A/B at GCSE and by individual negotiation.
COURSE CONTENT:
This is a modular course consisting of three modules taken over one year for AS, six
modules taken over two years for A level.
In the first year all students will follow three modules: two compulsory Pure Modules
plus one of either Mechanics or Statistics. This makes up the AS course. At the end of
the first year, for students gaining a grade A in all three modules, the opportunity to
study Further Mathematics in the second year is given.
In the second year three more modules are taken: a further two compulsory Pure
Modules and one optional: Mechanics or Statistics modules.
Pure Mathematics includes Differential Calculus, Co-ordinate Geometry,
Trigonometry and Algebra.
Statistics includes the uses and abuses of statistics in the media and politics and it is an
extension of GCSE Statistics.
Mechanics involves the study of problems in the physical world. Topics include vector
analysis, projectiles, forces and accelerated motion.
ASSESSMENT
AS level: Three 1 ½ hour exams taken; at the end of the first year.
A level: Three 1 ½ hour exams taken; at the end of the second year.
AS Further Mathematics
Three 1 ½ hour examinations taken at the end of the second year.
