ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
GCSE Grade C or above in English
The aims of this course are to:
· develop a knowledge and understanding of the legal system and an ability to
evaluate its operation and performance.
· introduce substantive law and require simple application of aspects of criminal
law and civil law (either tort or contract).
· at A2, to further develop knowledge of the legal system and of substantive law
through criminal law or contract law. Evaluation of the concepts of law
continues to be developed at this level of study.
COURSE CONTENT
UNIT 1 – Law making and the legal system. Parliamentary law making, delegated
legislation, statutory interpretation and judicial precedent.
UNIT 2 – The concept of liability. The principles of criminal liability and the courts
procedure and sentencing. Liability in negligence and the courts procedure and
damages. Formation and breaches of contract and the courts procedure and damages.
UNIT 3 – Criminal or contract law. Fatal and non-fatal offences against the person.
Contract – formation, terms, vitiating factors, discharge and remedies.
UNIT 4 – Criminal or Tort and concepts of Law. Criminal law (offences against
property). Law of Tort including negligence, occupier’s liability and nuisance.
Concepts of law including law and morals, law and justice, fault and balancing
conflicting interests.
