ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Grade B or above GCSE Chemistry, Grade BB and
above GCSE Dual Award Science. A grade B or higher in GCSE Mathematics is
highly desirable.
COURSE CONTENT:
This is a modular course consisting of 3 units for AS and 6 units for A level
(cumulative)
The course content is delivered through study of contemporary areas of Chemistry,
such as, climate change, green chemistry, pharmaceuticals and chemistry research.
AS LEVEL:
Unit 1: The core principles of chemistry
Unit 2: Application of core principles of chemistry
Unit 3: Practical internal assessment.
A LEVEL: All of the above plus three further units:
Unit 4: Rates, equilibria, and further organic chemistry
Unit 5: Transition metals and organic chemistry
Unit 6: Practical internal assessment.
WHY STUDY CHEMISTRY?
Chemistry is an essential subject for anyone who wishes to study Medicine,
Veterinary, Science, Dentistry, Forensic Science, Nursing, Environmental Science,
Agricultural engineering and many other careers.
This course will allow you to develop a wide range of skills requested by employers
and universities e.g. problem solving, effective communication, handling data,
research and information skills, numeracy and ICT. Chemistry is a very practical
subject which requires a high level of organisation, accuracy and teamwork.
ASSESSMENT:
The theoretical units are assessed through a variety of methods –short answer,
extended questions, contemporary context questions, data analysis, etc.
The practical assessment consists of two parts: general practical competence awarded
on the student’s laboratory work over the whole course.
Assessment activities based on specific skills such as observation, measurement and
preparation.
